Series 8 Views

In addition to Series 8 cards with monochrome views and a red ensign behind a maple leaf and beaver, these Series 8 cards all share a standard card back, as shown below.

This first section of the cards have the additional text “F. Le Blond, Jr., Niagara Falls, Canada.” This appears to be the work of the son of F. Le Blond, who was proprietor of Niagara Falls’ Hotel Lafayette Bazaar, and who created a series of overprints over contemporary postcards of that era dating from about 1899 until the early 1900s.

This section of the cards bear the text “R.P. Slater, Niagara Falls, Canada.” R.P. Slater was also responsible for issuing postcards produced by other publishers, including J.C. Wilson & Co., with his overprint from the late 1890s onwards in Niagara Falls.

This section of the cards bear the text “C.A. Miller, Whirlpool Rapids, Canada Side.”

Greetings From Niagara Falls

This Series 8 variation shows the added text “Greetings from Niagara Falls” on the card.

Thousand Islands

This Series 8 variation shows the added text “Thousand Islands” on the card.

Coloured Image

This Series 8 variation shows a coloured, rather than monochrome, image added to the card.

CVCC Series 8

Canadian View Card Co. was based in Toronto, and was a prolific publisher of early Canadian patriotic postcards, as well as other early view cards.

Their early series of postcards do not often bear the publisher’s attribution, however, an example from the Canada Coat of Arms series shows the publisher’s name associated with the card back that was frequently used with their patriotics series of cards. Later view cards more commonly bore the name of the publisher.

The series numbers are taken from Mike Smith’s The Canadian Patriotic & Heraldic Postcard Handbook 1897–1945 Volume 1. Thirty cards in Series 8 have been catalogued by Mike Smith to date.
