Vancouver B.C. to Germany

Vancouver B.C.

with the inscription The Province Publishing Coy Ltd

Vancouver B.C.

This postcard is part of a series of post card designs from The Province Publishing Coy. Ltd., however, in this case, the design has been printed on a piece of Canadian government-issued postal stationery. It resembles a PADPOST (Pictorial ADvertising on POstal STationery), although the card was not really advertising anything, but was a picture postcard, in a similar style to the company’s picture postcard series.

The card was postmarked July 8, 1901, but was uprated with a 1¢ QV Numeral stamp to pay postage to Germany. The postcard bears a July 26, 1901 receiving cancel from Kattowitz, Germany. District Kattowitz was created in 1873 within the Kingdom of Prussia. On 1 April 1899, the city of Kattowitz was separated from the district, becoming an independent city. In 1922, after the Silesian Uprisings, Kattowitz and its surrounding district were ceded to the Second Polish Republic.

The B.C. Printing & Engr. Corp. Ltd. arose from a name change in 1899 from the The Province Publishing Coy. Ltd. While this card was postally used in 1901, it was printing in 1899 or earlier under the former entity known as The Province Publishing Coy. Ltd. Canadian postal regulations permitted cards of this nature from December 9, 1897 onwards.
