Lou F. Scholes
Champion Amateur Sculler
Of The World
Time 8:23 World’s Record
This patriotic postcard series from an unknown publisher illustrates Lou Scholes following his world record time at Britain's Henley-on-Thames. Lou Scholes was the “first Canadian to win the Diamond Sculls, rowing’s unofficial amateur world championships, in 1904”. He planned on defending his title in 1905, but was struck with typhoid fever and could not attend.
So significant was this victory to Canadians that when Scholes returned to Toronto as champion, he was greeted by a welcoming crowd of between 70,000 and 80,000 people.
