The town of Wiarton is known as the gateway to the Bruce Peninsula, and, for many years, had a pair of stone gate posts with white painted wooden gates at the south end of town at the top of the hill. Wiarton’s post office first opened on August 1, 1868, and was staffed by B.B. Miller until November 21, 1877. Neil McMillan was appointed postmaster on January 1, 1878, and remained in that position until his death on July 2, 1888. On September 1, 1888, David Dinsmore was appointed postmaster, until his death on May 28, 1908. He was followed by James Walmsley until 1913, and then Thomas Allan until 1944.
