St. Johns, Newfoundland
This W.G. MacFarlane view card shows a Newfoundland no. 80 1¢ Queen Victoria stamp from the Royal Family series issued in 1897 through 1901, and represents an early example of a foreign postcard issued by MacFarlane. The card was likely used about 1902 but does not have a legible postmark.
The sender’s handwriting on the card front states “These cards have just been printed & this gives you a very good idea of the city from the harbour. The building at the top is the R. Catholic Church. The harbour is generally crowded with vessels from all parts of the world. G.M.B.”
The card was mailed to Pendrith C.V. Jones Esq. Glautaff House, Troedyrhiw R.S.C. Glamorganshire, Wales. Troedyrhiw is a small village in what was formerly one of the 13 historic counties of Wales.
