J.L. Jones Engraving Co.

Loretto Abbey 1905

J.L. Jones was born in Coventry, England, and emigrated to Canada in 1875. He commenced business as an artist wood engraver in 1884. In 1893, he was declared “the leading exponent of this beautiful art [wood engraving] in the city of Toronto”. He was awarded medals for his work at the Colonial Exhibition, England, 1886; Gold Medal at Jamaica, 1891; Bronze Medal at St. John's, N.B.; two prizes at the Toronto Exhibition; and first prize at Sherbrooke.

J.L. Jones established J.L. Jones Engraving Co. in Toronto. In 1893, he employed 10 skilled engravers specializing in illustrations for catalogues, books, magazines, by means of wood engravings, and all photo processes. The company specialty was, however, wood engraving. Jones was the only Canada importer of box wood for engravers' use, the wood being “carefully selected and imported from the United States”.

He was also responsible for engraving & printing postcards and covers, from at least 1895, through the next decade.
