on a QV 1¢ Leaf stamp
This unusual patriotic post card features the Blue Ensign. Since 1864, this flag was to be flag of ships in public service or commanded by an officer in the British Royal Naval Reserve. The Blue Ensign, red pennant and the circular element with the “F.C. Daniel & Co, Toronto” text all work together to conjure up a nautical theme for the card.
A similarly nautically themed card for James McCready & Co., Boots & Shoes, of Montreal, bears sufficient similarities that it may have been designed by the same publisher. An image below shows its use in 1897.
