Arthur Strauss Inc. was a New York-based publisher who extended their coverage to Canadian cards. According to the Metropolitan Postcard Club of New York City, the company published cards from 1900 to 1905. Most of the cards by Arthur Strauss feature American locales in a number of different series. The series published in Toronto shown below featured a patriotic British Red Ensign flag entwined with maple leaves. and bore the the inscription “Arthur Strauss Inc., Publishers, Toronto, Canada”.
Another Canadian series featured a crest and a Red Ensign flag and the inscription “Arthur Strauss Inc., Publishers, New York”. A series published in New York with Canadian scenes appears to have been sold and used in both the USA and Canada. Strauss cards also exist published in Niagara Falls, N.Y. A series bearing crossed US and Canadian flags may also have been intended for a cross-border audience.
All of the Toronto area cards shown here used photos from Galbraith Photo Co.
As a footnote, the Canadian Red Ensign was used as early as 1868 on an informal basis. Despite its lack of official status, the Red Ensign flew over the Parliament Buildings in Ottawa until 1904 when it was replaced by the Union Jack.
