Photochrom Co. Detroit

Niagara

The Gorge Route R.R.

Postally used from Niagara Falls to Malmo Sweden, August 15, 1899

This postcard, produced by the Photochrom Co. of Detroit, was mailed from Niagara Falls, Ontario, by way of Hamilton, to Malmo Sweden on August 15, 1899. It bears a 2¢ purple QV Numeral stamp, no. 76, which was superceded a week later by the 2¢ carmine.

According to the Detroit Publishing Co. website, The Photochrom Company of Detroit was incorporated December 17, 1895  when photographer Edwin H. Husher assembled financial backing including the Photoglob Company of Switzerland and William A. Livingstone, son of prominent Detroit shipping, banking, and publishing magnate William Livingstone, Jr.

Although the company maintained the Photochrom Company name, the company was known as the Detroit Photographic Company from 1898 until 1906 when it went by the name of the Detroit Publishing Company.

Based on this information, this card was likely printed in 1898 prior to the Detroit Photographic Company name change.
